About Us

Kiwi Country, Te Anau was born from a vision by owner John Greaney to provide a stopping point for coaches travelling from Queenstown to the iconic Milford Sound, Piopiotahi. The land was a vacant lot in the centre of Te Anau for many years before John developed it into a complex that today includes retail shopping, a café and public toilets.

John has been a retailer for over 40 years, initially buying Speden’s Sports shop in the late 70’s and developing this into Te Anau Sports (later part of Outside Sports, Queenstown & Wanaka). He continued to grow his retailing operations, and opened up the current Kiwi Country site on Miro Street in December 1994.  In 2003, Kiwi Country Geraldine also became a reality, capturing the coach traffic leaving Christchurch on its way to Queenstown via Tekapo.

In 2006, John negotiated to purchase Westland Greenstone in Hokitika, an iconic West Coast business retailing and manufacturing NZ Pounamu to be sold through the various stores.

Retailing is in the family DNA, John’s daughters Rachel, the company buyer, and Megan both joined the company after they graduated from university to continue the family retailing legacy. They both have an involvement in the business. Their combined work history and experience bring a breadth of business and leadership skills to the company that all complement each other and allow them to work to their strengths. They are also supported by a fantastic team who help keep the business running day by day 365 days of the year.

We look forward to welcoming you as customers and keeping you as followers and friends.
